L-Lysine is one of 9 essential amino acids, meaning that it is essential for survival and that the body cannot synthesize it requiring intake. L-Lysine is of vital importance when it comes to tissues in the body as it is one of the building blocks of collagen, providing collagen's tensile strength and stability. And while it’s vital for many different aspects of health such as carnitine production , many use L-Lysine for its immune system properties, namely its effects on cold sores.

L-Lysine and Arginine share the same transporter to cells and since the Cold Sore Virus (Herpes Simplex Virus) thrives off of Arginine, L-Lysine competes and replaces Arginine in the transporter, effectively not allowing the virus to replicate.

A 6-month study found that recurrence, severity and duration were dramatically reduced with a dose of 1.25 g/day of L-Lysine . However, in shorter studies, such as a 12 weeks long, it was noted that the best course of action for reducing the occurrence, duration and severity of cold sores was routine administration of L-Lysine. L-Lysine is especially effective when combined with an antiviral medication such as acyclovir (Zovirax™) or valcyclovir (Valtrex™).

For added benefits, this product is combined with Vitamin C, which aids in the absorption of L-Lysine along with other benefits of Vitamin C: immune support and collagen synthesis.
